Step into the Moonbeam Classroom and you will witness the children growing right before your eyes! Our “little seedlings” all seem to have green thumbs! Outings to “Peggy’s Garden” have been fun, educational adventures. The class began by preparing Moonbeam’s plot. Using fingers and shovels, the children carefully weeded the soil. Numerous girls and boys expressed an interest in the root systems that were discovered. Next, the Moonbeamers dug holes and helped plant cucumber seedlings. Once watered, the children made numerous predictions. One child said, “They will grow long and big.” Another exclaimed, “The sun needs to come out for the plants.” One boy said, “The leaves will be bigger and bigger.” The Moonbeam children can’t wait to see their crops develop. And, of course, they look forward to delicious, home-grown cucumbers for snack time! The passion for gardening, of course, translated into the classroom setting. Each pupil had the opportunity to decorate and plant his or her own grass head. The children continue to enjoy giving their “green” buddies a haircut from time to time. Ms. Natalie says, “This is a good lesson in what to cut and what not to cut.”  Indeed! Additionally, our Moonbeamers planted pumpkins and sunflowers. Once watered and, at last, sprouted, they were sent home!

Coming up:  A summer filled with whole-school water events and collaborative art activities!

As always, the Rainbow Room is a flutter with child-driven education, fun and friendship! Magic Garden’s annual butterfly hatch made quite an impact on the Rainbow children. Our students keenly observed the caterpillars as they crawled about, transformed into chrysalides and, finally, broke free as beautiful butterflies. What a rich and unforgettable adventure in learning! The Rainbow friends continue to enjoy a bevy of themed activities. During numerous Circle Time meetings, the girls and boys listened to Eric Carle’s classic board book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Incorporating gross-motor movement and dramatic play, the children loved using scarfs to act out the life cycle sequence of this creature. Our Rainbow toddlers continue to flap around the classroom on a daily basis. Too adorable! Exploring the content area of art, the Rainbow students each had the opportunity to create and construct a whole-class, three-dimensional caterpillar! A variety of recycled materials were available for creative repurposing. Do visit our gorgeous display in the classroom!

Coming up: A fun summer filled with water play activities!

Starlight

The flutter of springtime critters can be heard during adventures with our Starlight crew! Lots of creepy, crawly coolness is in full swing!

Magic Garden’s annual butterfly hatching is currently underway. Led by Ms. Gail, this experience offers our students a first-hand peek at the beautiful life cycle of painted lady butterflies. Our caterpillar capsules recently arrived and the girls and boys continue to “check in” on these little creatures throughout each afternoon. The students have made countless scientific observations and predictions. Incorporating music, a new, favorite tune is “The Butterfly Song.” Check out the lyrics below (surely, your child can teach you the song!).

“The Butterfly Song”

A fuzzy caterpillar climbed up in a tree.

He wiggled long, he wiggled short.

He wiggled just for me.

I put him in a box.

“Don’t you move,” I said.

But when I opened up that box, he was a butterfly instead.

In addition, the Starlight children have loved creating some gorgeous insect-themed artwork. Bug stamping was an immense hit. Also, they enjoyed painting their own egg carton caterpillars and creating cut grass collages. Do have a look at these masterpieces!

Coming up: An exploration concerning the life of bumble bees, with a new unit on water activities. Very fun!

Twilight

The Twilight friends have been living it up each and every afternoon at Magic Garden. As temperatures climb (slowly), the girls and boys continue to enjoy the splendors of our giant campus. Recently, the children met up with Mr. Chris, the town of Lincoln’s head T-ball coach. As a group, the children learned how to properly hold a bat, make contact with the ball and run bases. As always, the Twilight kiddos hit a homerun In addition, our pupils continue to enjoy soccer games/drills with Ms. Olivia. Kicking strategies and running are only a few skills they have focused on. During all these athletic outings, the Twilight friends have learned about teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance. Awesome job, kids!

Inside, the Twilight crew always looks forward to settling down for weekly story times. Ms. Maria shares countless literary treasures with the Pre-K children. Some current favorites are Billy’s Worries by Anthony Browne and A Walk to the Great Mystery by Virginia A. Stroud. The Magic Tree House chapter books are also a frequent classroom request. Thanks, Ms. Maria!

Coming up: More visits with Paddington Bear (he has gone home with almost every single family at Magic Garden! Wow! Such a cool community builder!) Also, up next: new science experiments!
