The afternoon Starlight crew has been crafting up a storm! Focusing on the concept of food and proper nutrition, our children followed multi-step instructions to construct some gorgeous pieces of art! For instance, after a yummy (and healthy) snack of watermelon chunks, our kiddos utilized paper plates, paint, and torn up tissue paper to create their own wonderful wedges. Delicious! On another occasion, the children sang the preschool classic, “On Top of Spaghetti” and then, crafted their own pasta dishes with yarn (noodles) and construction paper circles (meatballs). Besides having a blast with these art ventures, our students are exercising their listening skills, fine-motor strength and creative expression! Do visit our classroom displays!

Our Twilighters have been outside taking advantage of the beautiful afternoon sun!

Art is all around us! Recently, the Sunshine children kicked off Magic Garden’s annual DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Art Fest! Our kiddos toured deCordova’s main exhibits, viewing countless pieces of contemporary art. They marveled at the different materials employed, offering their own thoughts and interpretations. Later, the girls and boys had a blast romping through the outdoor sculpture park. Teachers observed that our students appeared to be particularly interested in sculptor Sol LeWitt’s installation, Tower. After returning to school, the children were each furnished with sugar cubes and glue. They crafted their own mini sculptures! Our Sunshiners cannot wait for another art adventure at DeCordova.

The Starburst friends are prepared for take off! Recently, a very special guest visited our classroom. One of our students had the opportunity to welcome his father, an Air Force Pilot! Lt. Col. John Penders shared many stories with our students, even demonstrating digital flight pattern displays. Later, the Starburst children tried on Mr. John’s official flying gear, helmet and all. Fun! The Starburst Class followed up by reading numerous books, including My First Airplane Ride by Patricia Hubbell and A is for Airplane by Mary Ann McCabe Riehle. During outdoor gross-motor time, our girls and boys each constructed paper airplanes and soared them through the playground skies!

The Moonbeam children recently kicked off their annual butterfly unit! As soon as our caterpillar pals arrived, our students used rulers and magnifying glasses to observe their daily growth. One child exclaimed, “He’s moving and he’s eating!” Another said, “This guys seems sleepy.” One student commented, “It keeps climbing!” Once our new critter pals were safely in their chrysalis phase, Ms. Gail transferred them to a hatching tent. And the waiting ensued! While the butterflies were hard at work transforming, our kiddos created caterpillar egg carton crafts, as well as symmetric butterfly prints. Quite like magic, our new friends finally hatched from their chrysalids and skittered about. Yay! On the first warm morning, the children cheered as our butterfly friends were released into the wild, flapping freely.
