The Sunshine Classroom recently completed an exciting investigation of the five senses. Inspired by our student’s interests, all learning adventures were hands-on, multi-faceted and organic in nature.
*Sight: The children explored the anatomy of the human eyeball (pupil, iris, lid, tear duct). They used mirrors to examine their own eyes and sketched their findings
*Taste: Our Sunshine friends had a blast learning about the different tasting areas of the tongue. A plethora of blindfolded taste tastes were yummy and informative
*Smell: The girls and boys took part in a scent matching lab that included coconut and vanilla. They certainly loved the smell of apple crisp being served during snack time. Delicious!
*Sound: Our pupils enjoyed identifying noise boxes and playing sound bingo. They even crafted musical instruments.
*Touch: The Sunshine crew explored the sensation of warm and cold items. They also classified countless attributes, including rough/soft, smooth/bumpy.
Building activities are a Pre-K staple. This activity fosters the development of fine-motor skills, spatial awareness and emerging math/engineering abilities. Lately, the Starburst Class has been a construction zone! After exploring some topical non-fiction books, Ms. Ashley wanted to provide our girls and boys with new, varied materials. During an open-ended activity time, popsicle sticks, glue and oaktag were introduced. The Starburst children went to work, building astounding creations. One student said, “I’m making a library…with a fountain.” “I’m trying to build a restaurant, a pizza restaurant,” exclaimed another child. One boy said, “I’m building Magic Garden!” Do stop by our classroom display and see our little “Starburst Town.”
